There was a time a few years ago when President Bush came to Grand Rapids MI. He was scheduled to speak at East Grand Rapids high school. There was a group of people who had come down to protest, and I was among this group carrying a sign. We had been told there was a particular place we could be - (not too far from the school) where we needed to stay to do our protest. It became clear after awhile that the President's motorcade would not be driving by where we would be at all. A few of us took the chance of getting in trouble and moved to where the President would actually be driving through-- but we were just a little too late, he had already gone by.
We made our way over to Jersey Junction, the local ice cream parlor, to ease our let down with a sugar high. There were a lot of people who had the idea to get ice cream. While we were waiting in line to order I began to eaves drop on the elderly ladies just ahead of us, who where speaking of some of the other protests they had been involved in. After a little while we introduced ourselves and found out these ladies were Catholic nuns with a long history of speaking out against injustice. We had a nice time sharing over ice cream cones. As we turned to go one of the nuns said "Bless You" in parting and when she said these words I felt something hit me. It was actually physically palpable, a feeling of intense love and warmth and my knees felt a little weak for a moment or two. I will never forget that experience for its reminder of the reality of the spiritual world that is invisible and yet real - and all around us always.
