This Woman Chooses Color Over Chocolate

This painting is available here.

Brenda has launched into a new series of paintings that study color relationships and organic pattern systems. For Brenda the only thing in the world that may come before her love of color is chocolate. She has been my teacher over the past 25 years to see how specific color combinations can have a strong emotional impact. The way we react to color has a lot to do with what happens when one color is set next to another.

Even though these  paintings are nonobjective and  do not seek to "look like something" I think they are born out of her close and careful observations of the natural world.  When I am planning how much garlic to plant for the Fall, Brenda is considering what new flowers she may add to the butterfly garden in the Spring. For a woman who thinks deeply and is slow to speak, color and pattern have become an even higher mode of communication than speech.
