I have seen this Basquiat film several times over the years and this is one of the scenes that has continued to haunt me. How do artist become "air born"? I would think that the film maker and painter Julian Schnable would know if anyone would.
It all sounds pretty simple on this basketball court. Keep doing your work, don't change it up to much and get yourself into the right social circles. Unfortunately almost every artist I have ever known has not been able to pull this off.
Artists are generally bored quickly with things and are constantly changing their work to keep themselves engaged. Because of this constant change they never reach a significant altitude with any one type of work. Secondly, artist are generally poor and financially ignorant and socialize with other artists who have all the same money handicaps. Because of this natural tendency they tend to live their whole lives with in the same low financial strata with all the rest of their poor rag tag creative friends.
Alright artists, who among you has the courage to follow your local Warhol and Bischofberger into the fancy restaurant and toss your work on to the table? Are you ready to break out of your little cozy cluster?
