Last Saturday afternoon the Wealthy Orphans played the Pyramid Scheme along with an all star cast of local artists to celebrate the release of the new album Throwing Glory. The room was filled with kids, parents, grandparents and others. A mountain of pizza was consumed. Puppets got the audience singing. Video added mystery and depth to the music. The dancers danced.
Live performance is nothing short of a miracle every time it happens. Every performance comes out of an accumulation of hours and hours of practice and past performances. Every performance is met with a host of distractions and things that go wrong. Every performance has the potential to inspire and even change the course of a persons life.
There are live music venues in cities all over the country that step into the very important role of creating context for musicians to share what they create with an audience. Downloading a mp3 to your lap top couldn't be more convenient but being at a live performance is knocking on heavens door. I am thankful for the city of Grand Rapids and all the great and hard working people here that continue to keep the cultural stew cooking. Thanks to all of you that were a part of making last Saturday so amazing; artists, venue staff and audience.
Our next show will be at Calvin College December 4th Cave Cafe 8PM
