This new collage, Brand New Dress can be yours to help you "swim up stream". Go here to find out how.
Artists are generally soft spoken persons who are concerned with their inner visions and images. But that is precisely what makes them feared by any coercive society. For they are the bearers of the human beings age old capacity to be insurgent. They love to immerse themselves in chaos in order to put it into form just as God created form out of chaos in Genesis, forever unsatisfied with the mundane the apathetic, the conventional, they always push on to new worlds. Thus they are the creators of the "uncreated conscience of the race."
Rollo May, The Courage To Create, published in 1975
I had to look up insurgent after I read this yesterday. I found that it referred to the spirit in a person to buck against the current, to swim upstream when everyone else is floating on inner tubes going down stream with a drink in their hand. This could mean breaking social taboos or even breaking the law when necessary.
Uncreated conscience may refer to the ability of artists to make visible what lies underneath any particular culture. It would seem that the vast majority of people on any given day are out the door and off to work with a mug of hot coffee in one hand their car keys in the other. They are off to work with no time at all to reflect on whether the work they are bound to do on that day is even worthy of their precious life energy and days left on the earth. Artists are there to make the invisible life forces visible and at the same time prod us to reflect on our role we have been given to play in this vast mystery of daily life, love, loss, hope and ruin.
