This is a painting of Flora the goddess of spring painted by Caroline Bardua in 1843. Goethe made a way for this young woman to study art in Weimar Germany - at a time when few women would ever have that kind of opportunity. She became a successful portrait painter in Berlin and was able to support her sister and pay for her brothers education. She founded an artistic club for women.
My birthday sometimes falls on the first day of Spring. I have always felt that Spring is my season. Coming out of a long Michigan winter and seeing the first flowers push up from the ground is a powerful experience. Spring is a wonderful reminder of how things in our life that can seem so dead and gone, may only be at rest and waiting to come back - with revived vigor and freshness at a later time.
In a culture that seems to insist on constant productivity, it is good to observe nature's way of taking a rest and letting her fields go under the snow for a time. My afternoon nap is one simple way I have found to recharge my self in the middle of the day. What do you do ?
