I am pleased to share this new video by Pearl Beerhorst which beautifuly documents the collaborative collage paintings that my wife Brenda and I created in public recently. These paintings were made during the Live Coverage event for UICA at one of the Steelcase buildings in Kentwood Michigan last February on Valentines day. A very appropriate day for us to attempt to make a couple of paintings together come to think of it.
Go here to see a painting we did together that is available for purchase.
A word regarding our process. The images you see us sorting through and snipping with scissors are original woodblock prints that have been printed ahead of time on various pieces of ephemera. We print on old book pages, sheet music, wall paper, really any kinds of paper that has existed in a previous context. We are selecting odd bits and pieces and fixing them to the painting along with paint and painting medium. You can see how the paintings evolve through a process of painting and painting over. We scrape and sand through the layers we have built up to create a finished painting that is a poetic statement of how our lives are composed. If you think of it, our lives are made out of the many layers of experiences that weave together to make us into the unique people we are today.
