Rain sits here for her portrait while sister Pearl composes her shot. There is some ten years between these two sisters. Every day they are together. They do not go off to school or off to work. They, along with their other siblings and parents, stay in a steady orbit around our home. There are of course trips made to the library, the grocery store or to the farmers market. Some days Brenda may quietly slip away with just Pearl to go to one of the nearby coffee shops for tea or a Kumbucha. This day, in this moment, it was time to create a portrait in the back yard under the grape arbor.
Yesterday I went with Shepherd on our bikes down to Central High school were we got a tour of the building and met Nicki the new principal. He will be attending the montessori portion of this high school program in September. He just had his 15th birthday and will be in the 9th grade. This feels like a big deal because we have never had one of our children leave to go "off to school". We feel excited and anxious for what amounts to a real adventure for not just Shepherd but our entire family. This is a very old school in a historic neighborhood that consists of Victorian mansions left behind by the former lumber barons who were the original wealthy elite of our city. The astronaut Robert B Chaffee graduated from Central High 1956.
