Beautiful Rose Beerhorst sewing a button bracelet at the Fulton Street Artisans Market 9/2/12
Every Sunday morning and afternoon, through-out this dry hot summer - I have spent with my daughter Rose at an open air artisan market in our city sharing our family's artwork with our local community. Sometimes we sell well and sometimes we don't.
The morning begins early with getting everything packed into the Wonder Wagon. We wheel the wagon over to the market and then we set everything up. We do our best to create an inviting environment that will catch people in our dragnet of hand-crafted beauty. We usually have something with us that we can work on while people stroll by. We smile and greet people. We may say something like, "I like that bag" or, "Cool t-shirt!" as a way to begin a connection. Sometimes when people are lingering over listening to the CD in the boom box or the selection of hand printed woodblock cards and it seems like they are getting ready to move on - holding off a purchase I will say, "Why don't you just take a card on the house today". That always takes the person by surprise. Sometimes they take it with them gratefully. Sometimes they insist that they buy it because they wanted to anyway and where just holding back. Sometimes people just need that tactful little push.
On the days that we are not selling, when we feel like we are fishing but the fish just aren't biting, it can be really tough to keep up a positive outlook. Sometimes we are not able to, and we just sort of crash as the afternoon drags on. Fortunately Rose and I have each other to keep each other encouraged on those hard days. Yesterday was one of those tough days - and Rose was there to help me keep going (although everything turned around in a big way in the last 45 minutes of the market).
I have really enjoyed this summer working the Fulton Street Artisans Market with Rose, through the thick and thin. It is a great thing to have friends to go through life with and it is especially great when those friends happen to be family as well.
