"Art is a force of transformation and self realization. As a potter transforms an ordinary lump of clay into work of beauty, that clay transforms the potter into an artist and craftsperson of his or her community. This transformative power of the arts gives us a sense of belonging and unlocks the doors of optimism and hope." Satish Kumar
I love this quote for it speaks to the power that art making releases within a community. Making art is always met with many unknowns. You begin writing a song, but you don't know if it will ever become something other people will care to hear. You begin a painting, but you have no guarantee it will serve any real purpose. You begin to weave a rug, but you wonder if any one want to buy it. It often feels like what Ray Bradbury spoke of when he said; art making was like "jumping off a cliff and building your wings on the way down".
To continue to jump off that cliff artists need to find love and refreshment within a nurturing community, where they can eventually find their place to belong. I am very thankful for the city where I live - because it feels like I have found that here in Grand Rapids. I also appreciate the online community I have found through this blog - and those of you who have continued to visit with me here, and leave your comments from time to time. Your love and interest been a powerful force to help me continue on this very mysterious artistic life journey. Thank you!
