A musician must make music, and artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself. Abraham Maslow
That terrible mood of depression of whether it's any good or not is what is known as The Artist's Reward. Ernest Hemingway
I have mixed feelings about this piece so I appreciate the Hemingway quote I found this morning. I worked on this painting through the end of the winter and it came along slowly. The St. Veronica painting on the card under the shell has been close to my heart for the past year. St Veronica, in case you don't know, was the woman who wiped the sweat from Jesus's face as he was going through the streets, carrying his cross to his own execution. Legend has it, that a perfect image of Jesus's face was left on her cloth and thus the first icon was created.
I love this story and the way compassion figures into the role of the image maker. The terrible mood that Hemingway speaks of (and very likely eventually was overcome by - with a pistol in his hand) is often the territory the artist finds himself in. Fortunately by plunging back into the process, those feelings almost always slink back off to the corner of the room.
