I found this picture on the floor of my daughters attic room last night when I went up to read the next installment of House Of Thirty Cats. Rain said, "Dad are going to read?" because I had drifted off in silence, to an earlier time in my life -- long before children or even marriage to a time when I pretty much just had myself to look after. At the time, when this photo was taken I was about 25 years old and living in Champaign Illinois, where I had enrolled in graduate painting studies at the University of Illinois.
Looking back on it now, I see what a good opportunity I had to take my art career to a more professional level. I had done my under grad work at Calvin College - - that had an art department kind of crammed into the basement, like it was an after-thought. I had always wanted to go to a "real" art school and now I had my chance. The program lasted two years and during that time I made some really good friends in Tim Vermeulen, Haynes Atkins, Linda Vredeveld, April Napier and Glen Davies -- to name a few.
That two years of being able to focus on making art did a lot to give me a good start on the path I have been on over the past twenty five years of art making.
