This little film was made by daughter Pearl last winter when Brenda and I were at a local fundraiser event at UICA making a painting together that was auctioned off that night. We had a lot of fun, not only working together that night, but getting all our stuff together to make it happen.
Artists with any visibility at all, get called on often to donate work to auctions because it has become a popular and pretty easy way to raise money and have some fun doing it. The built in irony is that the artists are often near bust financially-- and then called on to give away a piece of their work they couldn't sell. Then they are thrown into a social mixer with affluent people where they struggle with the unease of their resentment.
Artist love to share their work - even if it means giving it away. I like being able to practice generosity as much as the next person but I also feel that the time has come for artists to be invited onto boards and committees where they are being sought out for their unique perspective rather than being hit up for one more donation of their art work. If you are putting together a board of directors start looking around for an artist to add to the diversity.
