leaning towards spring

It is just after 9:00 and I just came back from the library. I rode there and back on my bike with a back pack over my shoulder. It was a cold 12 degrees. I look at this picture of Pearl and long for the warm weather that will eventually be here. The cold ride on my bike was so intense. Some times I feel like it is these extremes of life that keep me feeling alive. So I am glad for winter's harshness for the sake of contrast it creates.
I have been painting in the house because I just can't get the carriage house studio warm enough to work in with it's little wood stove and drafty up stairs. The winter presses our family together tighter and forces us to be with each other in ways we don't have to in the warmer weather. I am working on a painting which is a sort of family portrait which has Brenda in the role of Mother Mary and us all under the protective folds of her cloak. This painting of being huddled together is a little of what I have been feeling this winter.
