Avoiding A Train Wreck In The Studio

detail of print available here

This short video by Tom Sachs is to me an excellent model of how to run an artist studio where a team of assistants are present.  All the way through his bullet points comes a clear sense of boundaries and discipline which is the foundation for his studio.  The level of craftsmanship in what they are able to produce comes directly out of these ten bullets.

I am drawn to this sense of order because we have a large family with children that do not go off to school.  Mom and dad do not go off to an office but work and socialize right here at home. Add to that two or three borders living with us at any given time and you have a lot going on under one roof.  The only way to have a healthy work/live situation with several members in a relatively small quarters is to have clear boundaries.
