For ArtPrize 2012 we created a project we called Perspective Lifters. We created a site specific installation for an up scale coffee shop in Grand Rapids MI called Mad Cap Coffee. The piece included full size hand hewn ladders, drawings, paintings and one hundred woodblock printed houses folded into sculptures of varying size and design that were suspended from the 25 foot high ceiling. We also included displayed an artist statement that described the intent behind our project.
Our statement read as follows;
Perspective Lifters is a site specific installation by the Beerhorst family and friends to create work that augments the unique space of our venue. We are working with the theme of ladders and houses that, as both symbolic images and concrete things, remind us that with problems also comes opportunities. We have created these things with our own hands, and look at them in all their delicacy—the houses are paper—and strength—the wood of the ladders—as reminders of the strength and delicacy of life itself. We see life as not just material, but also spiritual. We look for the ladders in our own life as we make our way through it, and hope that, together, we will come home.
Perspective Lifters was very much a group effort. We had a team of ten committed people who met once a week through out most of the summer, planning, creating, as well as working with the coffee shop staff. Much of the satisfaction of these kinds of large projects is the relationships that are nurtured by working bringing creative people to work together for a common cause.
