Our band The Wealthy Orphans will be playing live on the air for WYCE 88.1 FM tonight at 7PM for the Fall Fund Drive. In the past I have taken a break from listening to this radio station during their fund drives because how tiring it can be to listen to the on going requests for listeners to call in and make pledges. My attitude has shifted to have more patience for this process as I have come to appreciate WYCE for keeping live radio alive for our local region. I also appreciate the way they support the local music scene.
I believe we are in an era when people are taking back our local regions culture from the big corporations that hijacked it for their own money making operations. We have become sick of the way culture has been homogenized with restaurant franchises and supermarket food across the country. We all have the same TV programs and Hollywood Movies to keep up with regardless of where we live in the country. Clear Channel radio has had the same effect of sucking the life out of our nations musicculture by creating an overly commercialized homogeneity that erases all the unique local flavors. Read this to have a better understanding of why radio feels so dead these days.
The Wealthy Orphans are taking time out to play on the air tonight to help support a local radio station that is still potent, regional and listener supported because it is not owned by Clear Channel nor is it rely on corporate financial support. This radio station is one of the few places left to go on the dial that has the rare life blood of real people in the studio that are there for the love of good music from all over the world yet keeping both feet firmly planted in our own local music scene.
