Brenda and I went to the last installment of A Winters Tune last night. This has been an annual Christmas concert in our town, celebrating local singer song-writers who all contribute one new song for the occasion. I was given the very special opportunity of leading the audience in singing Silent Night to close out the final show.
In an era when we are flooded with all the music that comes to us from the super-stars and big producers that make up the nations sound track -- the role of our local music must be rediscovered. What happens in a city's own peculiar music scene is more important than we often realize because it is these songs that are being written right here on our own soil that help us understand who we are. Just like a single person needs to develop a strong sense of identity in order to create their place in the world, so does a city.
Give thought to who your city is. What is your city wanting to become? -- what is your personal role in your city's coming into itself with potency and all its full color?
