This is the painting I will be exhibiting in Cathedral Square during Art Prize this year. It is called The Double Rose Vision. It is fitting to have this painting in that venue because the view in the portrait is a view from the Wealthy overpass just up the road from the corner there at Wealthy and Division streets. There is a passage from the Bible that goes like this, "We do not look to the things that are seen, but the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are passing away, but the things that are unseen are eternal." This scripture haunts my life and my paintings. I believe there is a spiritual world all around us but invisible . We are physical creatures with our feet on the ground and often enough stubbing our toes on our way to the bath room in the middle of the night but we also carry eternity in our hearts. The other day two of my little girls rescued a baby bird from the jaws of the family cat. They were excited at the prospect of nursing it back to health and maybe even a new little feathered friend but then in the space of a few minutes the little birds life spark was gone and it lay in daughter Rain's hand lifeless and still. In a moment there was a profound change that broke all three of our hearts at once. I love the physical world and the spiritual world and I want to make art that will bridge the two.
