This painting is inspired by a piece by the Dutch genre painter Gerard ter Borch who lived in the 17th Century. I have borrowed his composition and sought to make it my own. The models for this painting are my two daughters Pearl and Rain. Rain has a game boy in her hand and that is one way I have tried to take the painting out of the Dutch golden age and nail to ours.
The concept behind this theme has to do with the idea of "setting your house in order". In other words, for the Dutch it was not just a matter of having a tidy house and neat appearance. For them the physical plane wa a reflection of the spiritual condition. Combing out lice from you hair was akin to thinking right. It was another way to say, "don't let your mind become inhabited with thoughts that will only encumber you and bring you down."
I am a first generation imigrant from the Netherlands and I have always felt a deep connection with their painters of this era. I love the way they make connections from every day activities to otherworldly aspirations. In their world, everything has meaning and God is behind every dust pan and every kitchen pot.
