I really like this little film the Etsy people have given us here. After watching it I was reminded of how much I like canning and how much I like having a root cellar. Last year when we were working towards our Plan B Art Prize project we were also taking time to put up as much extra from our garden as possible. We supplemented what we got out of our micro urban farm with what was in season at the local farmers market.
It was very satisfying to watch the root cellar fill up with mason jars of our pickles, dilly beans, grape juice, and jams. It was also a great experience in February to open a jar of pickles into a bowl and feel a little of August come into the dinning room. Canning is a little like "puttin' summer in a jar" to quote Greg Brown.
So far this year nothing has gone from our garden into a mason jar and next week I hope to change that. It takes time and determination to recover some of our lost cultural routines and rituals but we must in order to rebuild a culture that is worth passing on to our children.
I would love for you to share any stories of your own regarding how "putting up for winter" has brought meaning and love to your families meal times.
