I have been enjoying the new book by Patti Smith titled Just Kids. It chronicles her life in relationship with the photographer Robert Mapplethorp living in NYC in the 70s. It is a powerful story of urban youth and artistic development against the back drop of one of my favorite cities.
The detail she uses to recreate her past is so vivid and natural it made me wonder how someone could reach back that far and recreate a day in their life so accurately. Then I thought that she may have kept a journal where she recorded information that would have otherwise been lost. In fact she mentions through out the book from time to time writing things down or failing to write. My next thought was wishing I had kept journals and then I looked over at a stack of mole skin sketch books and realized that I had been keeping my own sort of daily record for years through pictures and words. So eventually there will come a time that I will share my own story with the world between the covers of a book.
