Abstract painting is abstract. It confronts you. There was a reviewer a while back who wrote that my pictures didn't have any beginning or any end. He didn't mean it as a compliment, but it was.
Painting is easy when you don't know how, but very difficult when you do.
I have been painting seriously now for thirty years. I left a fine art program at Calvin College in 1982 and moved into an illegal work/live studio in the basement of the old UICA on Race Street. I have been at this a long time and it continues to be full of mystery to me. I think I will always feel like I have a lot to learn. It has become a place I can go where I almost always find comfort, breathing room. When I am painting and drawing it feels like anything is possible.
