This is the new album - by our band Wealthy Orphans. We recorded everything in about two weeks - whereas, my other two CDs, took a few years to do the recording -- working on and off when we could find the time. Because of this focused short span of time to record this project, this CD represents a more coherent body of work. Also these seven songs were worked up over the course of two years of playing live shows with the same four guys. In contrast to this, the first two albums, Rick Devon and I did what we could in the studio along with added guest musicians piecing things together.
The title "Throwing Glory" comes from Psycho Killer by the Talking Heads -- which includes the French phrase, Je me lance, vers la gloire. This apparently translates as "I start towards the glory" Some how I thought it meant "throwing glory". This is what I like to refer to as a "happy accident" -- because I like my mistranslation better as a album title.
I also had been listening to the bands Beriut and Devotchka as well as Tom Waits while creating this new material. I think you can hear the influence as well as the seasoning of the Ukraine (the fruit of some late night YouTube travel to Eastern Europe) in some of the waltz rhythms and accordion flourishes. Artist are always trolling for new sounds and fresh inspiration. Not only YouTube, but Pandora radio, has also been a great resource for me in this way. I especially enjoy the band bio info that is included with most every song selection that is played.
