I have found myself pinning artists working in their studios lately. It takes courage to make things. It can feel like swimming up stream. It can feel like you're cutting against the grain of a consumer culture that would rather have you buy what you need. Of course artists need you to purchase their work but even that itself is a creative act. It takes a lot of courage to collect art because in doing so the collector steps into the same dangerous and exciting world that the working artist occupies.
If you know a working artist, think of a way you could encourage them in the next few days. Buy a piece of their work. Bring them flowers. Send them a card with twenty dollars in it. Ask if you can do a studio visit. Take an artist out to lunch and encourage them to order dessert and insist on picking up the tab. I guarantee you this will be as good for you as it will be for them. Ultimately it will be good for the city where you live as well. Healthy thriving artists make a healthy thriving city.
