Hibiki Miyazaki, Lets Make Our Own Clothes, Etching
This is the work of Hibiki Miyazaki. She is an artist born in NYC currently living in Portland Oregon. I first came across her work through Flickr and felt an iimmediate strong connection with her quirky poetic language and strong, patched together compositions.
These paintings and prints are haunting for the way they recycle nostalgic images that feel like they have been plucked from children's books and how to manuals of the 40s and 50s. The ever hopeful "lets make our own clothes!" attitudes from that time have a whole new meaning in our world of runaway climate change and epidemic school room shootings.
These compositions that have the feel of something that has just organically grown onto the page like a tangle of brambles and wild flowers behind the barn hold up to a whole lot of quiet gazing. Ms. Miyazaki's etchings have been like a sign post pointing me towards finding my own way back into this old school process of making images with copper plates and heavy presses.
