Our family has dreamed of having another extended journey away from home ever since we returned from our year in Brooklyn NY in 2006. Italy has been the most consistant destination on our radar. We have had a few different attempts to put together a trip but now we are closer than ever.
We have reserved an old farmhouse in Southern Tuscany for three months beginning the first week of March 2015. We are going as the Beerhorst Family, all 8 of us. As of last week we all have passports. The next step is to secure airfare. We are not thinking of this as a vacation. We are considering this an art making adventure. This will be a way for us to discover new ways of looking at things, new ways of understanding and possibly even new ways of working. By putting our selves in a very different environement for an extended peroid time we hope to create an situation for transformation.
Our location is actually about two hours from Florence, (the beautiful city pictured above). We will be staying in Maremma, in an ancient stone farm house on a mountain covered in a chestnut forest. This is actually a rural enough piece of Europe to still support Italian cowboys as we are told. This will create for us certain limitations as well as opportunities.
We would like to be able to lease a car large enough to carry our entire family when we travel. To lease a van will add an additional $6500 to our budget for entire three months. If you are someone who has been considering an art purchase, this would be an excellent time as it would help us to secure wheels to and from our Italian home away from home.
