I drove out to NYC with daughter Rose last week. Besides an extra long drive due to bad weather and a bout with the flue we both had a great time. It is a tremendous city with a powerful legacy of people coming to it with big dreams and ambitions which continues to be the case. Rose sold her rugs and I did my speaking engagement and we drove home.
I can truly say Grand Rapids is a wonderful city to come home to. We have right now reached a cultural boiling point that is unprecedented in our history. There are so many good and hard working artists in many different disciplines here who are just beginning to get serious traction in their work. The excitement has become palpable. Along with these artists, the institutions that are here to foster the culture of our city have never been in a better position to serve with an informed and concentrated effort.
A city long known for its conservative religion and politics is experiencing an actual shift in its very cultural DNA as it becomes a powerful beacon to attract young creative culture makers. NYC is hemorrhaging this very group of people because it is become just too expensive to exist there while trying to get established as an artist. These people are looking for a home where they can not only flourish but also leave there mark. Grand Rapids is beginning to work its way up to the top of their list. I am very interested to know if you are seeing anything like what I am describing here in your own spheres of influence. What are you seeing? What are you feeling wants to happen?
