The dutch word for cozy is Gazellig. It is not only their word but their cultural gift. I am only half dutch but I would like to lay claim to this word and its meaning.
Brenda and I have never purchased a new piece of furniture in our 26 years of married life. Much of what we have in our home has either come off the curb or from a junk store or maybe craigs-list. I guess part of it is just not having the money but the other part is we like making things beautiful with cast off stuff. There is something comforting about those stains and scratches. Our sofa leg broke off and I repaired it with a piece of an stout apple tree limb cut and screwed into place. It's a little crooked like me. Perhaps that is the underlying message, that though this sofa is broken, repaired and a bit crooked and bumpy in places, it still has a place in our home. In spite of its obvious imperfection it is still very useful and beautiful.
