Over the past 27 years of marriage Brenda and I have come into the situation of running out of money staring in the face of oncoming bills and an nearly empty larder. It always feels like the financial version of the coyote running off the side of the cliff with his legs spinning in mid air and then the plummet. Yet some how we never hit the bottom of the canyon because we get saved in the nick of time, over and over again. This prayer from A Book of Prayer by Stormie Omartian has become a real comfort to me in those times:
Lord, help me to remember that when it seems to me as though things are going wrong, they may not be wrong at all. It may be that You are allowing these things to happen in order to bring me to a place of total dependence upon You so that Your purposes can be accomplished in my life. I trust that You have a purpose for every storm in my life, and when I pray and trust You, You will deliver me out of it.
I love this prayer for the way it shakes the etch-a-sketch and lets me look at my situation in a fresh way. Walking with God is all about living a life of faith. Living by faith is like Moses holding up his staff in front of the sea when the Egyptian army was in a mad rush to destroy all the people in Moses' care. The were at a huge dead end and then he raised his staff in faith and the impossiblehappened. If you are following God he will from time to time lead you into what appears to be a complete dead end and this is to see what you are made out of. Do you really trust God to take care of you? Do you really think that He is real and He is there for you in that particular difficult (impossible) situation? Tests are not just for school, life is full of them big and small every day.
