This is what my ArtPrize painting looked like a month ago.
This is what it looks like right now.
The painting is a panoramic view of Grand Rapids as seen from the Wealthy Street Overpass. The canvas unframed measures 90 1/2" x 30". My venue will be Peppino's Sports Grille at 130 Ionia.
I have been drawing and painting from this spot since I came back to town after graduate school at the University of Illinois in 1987. At that time drawing and painting my home town was a way for me to reacclimatize myself to the city. Twenty eight years later I find myself still at it. Grand Rapids has changed a lot over the past 28 years. It is as if the city has come back to life. I grew up in Kentwood from 1960-78 when the suburbs were the place to be and downtown was the place to flee. Now the city has not only become a place to live, work and hang out but a hot bed for art and culture as well. It is interesting to think about how my painting the city has coincided with its renewal.
