We began keeping rabbits in our backyard with the intention of developing a source of meat raised on our own property in the city. I knew it had been done by countless people in the past including my grandparents in the Netherlands and my wife's grandparents (who were transplants from northern Italy) in downtown Muskegon MI.
What I had not counted on was just how difficult it is to take the life of something so beautiful, soft and warm that possesses very large trusting eyes. I thought it would get easier but it actually seemed to become more difficult as my experiences multiplied. We now have two rabbits left. One large female and a modest size male living out their lives in separate hutches as family pets. For now it would seem that I have butchered my last bunny.
